Matru Sewa Sangh Sutika Gruha - Mahal
Matru Sewa Sangh’s Maternity Home situated in Sitabuildi was far for the people, therefore, it was decided that a new branch in Mahal area ought to be opened. As a result on 1 August 1927 in a rented house for monthly 10 Rs on Walker Road a new maternity home was opened. Kamlatai was the secretary of this branch and also looked after its administration/Management. Mrs. Manutai Gadgil and Ambutai Jog looked after collecting funds from the city. Dr. Shri. N Gadgil and Dr. Hardar promised to lend the Medical help and the Institution was registered this year.
Around this time, the Wada (on which the present maternity home of Mahal branch is built) which was the property of Shri Nihazuddin Khan, a Zamindar, was announced for sale. The MSS Organisation bought the wada from him for Rs. 13,750. The maternity home was shifted here and the provision of accommodation of students and place for facilitating teaching and learning was possible. The number of women delivering children also increased. A total of 658 babies were delivered in both the maternity homes of both the branches in the year 1932-33. 102 babies were delivered free of cost, which led to increase in expenses. Though the Mahal branch was receiving funds and donations, but it was not enough to meet the mounting expenses. A sum of Rs. 250 annually was received from N. Governor Butler but it was later reduced to Rs. 150. A sum of Rs. 400 annually was received from the Municipal committee. But all these went into repairs of the building, taxes, repayment of loans etc. So the financial situation of the branch was not very promising.
Dr. Mrs. Indirabai Niyogi was looking after the Medical aspect of both the branches (sitabuildi and mahal). She was also taking care of the training of the students. To assist her Dr. Vishnu Gangadhar Pande (MBBS) used to come daily and contributed in the smooth functioning of the hospital. Dr. Vishnu served the organisation without any receiving any remuneration. When Dr. Vishnu went to give his services during the war time in the year 1941, Dr. Pande took the responsibility of providing medical support for a decade. Later, Dr. Vinchure also contributed and later in 1942 Dr. Tare also joined the branch and stayed there. Many doctors from the city offered their valuable services to this branch. In the year 1965, the Mahal branch started its own independent office and management. A hostel for girls also was started.
Kamlatai Hospet took immense efforts to raise funds to buy a land for the Maternity Home. Due to her efforts today the Mahal Branch has its own building. On 12 January 1979 the Mahal Branch celebrated its Golden Jubilee and the ceremony was inaugurated at the hands of the chief minister of Maharashtra Shri Sharadchandraji Pawar.
The Mahal branch runs various projects besides being a Maternity home. It looks after Family Planning Programme; Pathology Laboratory; Bahuuddeshiya Swastha Karmachari Prashikshan Kendra, Balchikitsa Kendra, Apang aani Aashrit Sewa Vibhag etc.
