Matru Sewa Sangh Institute Of Social Work

The Matru Sewa Sangh is an all-women organization which has been actively involved in a variety of developmental activities ranging from maternity homes for elderly care, schools for mentally and physically challenged, nursing training, and social work education. Dr. Satyabala Tayal established the ‘Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work’ which is the first college of social work in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, in October, 1958. It has completed more than six decades in the field of social work education. The Government of Maharashtra honoured Dr. Satyabala Tayal for her distinguished services with the ‘Savitribai Phule Award’ in 1990.The Alumni of the Institute are placed both in governmental and non-governmental agencies. They have reached positions like DIG (Prisons), District Social Welfare Officer, Family Counsellors in Family Court, Asst. Commissioner of Tribal Welfare, Welfare Officers in Prisons, Senior functionaries industries, hospitals, and in non-governmental organizations etc. 

 

Certifications, Recognitions & Awards

The Institute which is considered as the premier social work training facility in Central India is affiliated to the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University since 1962. The UGC granted recognition to the Institute in 1976. The superior quality of social work education offered by the Institute was recognized by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission, which re-accredited (third cycle) the Institute with an “A” Grade in May 2014.
The Institute received government recognition and started receiving grant-in-aid from the Department of Higher Education of the Maharashtra Government for undergraduate courses since 1977.
The Institute has been recognized in 2018 by the RTM Nagpur University as a Place for Higher Learning and Research in Social Work, which is a mandatory requirement for carrying out Ph.D research in Social Work.
The RTM Nagpur University bestowed the Best NSS Unit Award to the Institute in the Year 2013-2014. Later on, in 2015-2016, the Maharashtra Government’s Department of Higher & Technical Education, Mumbai, selected the Institute and its Faculty (Dr Keshav Walke) for State-level Awards (‘Sarvothkrushta Mahavidylaya Puraskar’ & ‘Sarvothkrushta Karyakram Adhikari Puraskar’) for selfless and excellent NSS work during 2015-2016.

Infrastructure

The Institute has its own spacious campus located in Bajaj Nagar. It has all the facilities ideally required for teaching-learning. Well-constructed buildings on campus house the class rooms and other facilities, including a Women’s Hostel. It has a spacious play ground. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled and the library has computer terminals exclusively for the students.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Institute is to ensure accessibility to social work education for students from all sections of the society without any discrimination whatsoever. Its objectives are: a) to provide professional education in social work; b) to develop a sense of civic consciousness and social responsibility among the students; and c) to train personnel for a wide range of social work intervention at various levels in the field of social welfare through class room teaching, research and field work strengthened by various field action projects.

Facilities Available and Services Offered

The Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work conducts social work courses at the BSW, MSW, M. Phil (SW) and Ph.D levels for both men and women. At the MSW level it offers specializations in the following fields of social work: i) Human Resource Management, ii) Family & Child Studies, iii) Rural, Urban & Tribal Community Development and iv) Medical & Psychiatric Social Work. It has recognized Ph.D Guides in Social work and Library & Information Science.

Academic Programmes

The Institute which has highly qualified and experienced faculty members receives grant-in-aid from the Department of Higher Education of the Government of Maharashtra. It also receives financial support from the University Grants Commission for various development activities. It is centrally located in its own spacious and well-designed campus, which also houses a women’s hostel. It has tied up with some of the top social work agencies in Nagpur for field work placement. The Institute has been re-accredited with an ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The well-equipped specialized social work Library of the Institute with more than 18,000 books is one its kind in the region and caters to the needs of students and research scholars.
The Institute offers hostel facilities for women students. Admissions to all the courses – BSW, MSW, M. Phil and Ph.D – are open to students from all over India. It offers excellent field work training facilities. The Field Action Projects are an integral part of the Institute.
