Ashok prasuti Mandir Bilaspur

The Bilaspur Branch of the Matru Sewa Sangh was born out of an unfortunate incident. Dr.  Ramchandra Gopal Dixit lost his only son named Ashok in a railway accident in Borgaon. Dr. Ramchandra and wife desired to do a noble deed in the memory of their son. They approached Kamlatai Hospet and requested to open a maternity home in Bilaspur in the memory their son. They promised to contribute a sum of Rs. 5000 and also offered to help in raising funds and other help from people. Kamlatai Hospet put forward this proposal in the presence of the executive committee who approved it. Thus, a Maternity Home in Bilaspur at Tilak Nagar was established which was named as ‘Ashok Prasuti Mandir’ in the year 1945 on the auspicious occasion of Vasant Panchami. The branch was inaugurated under the presidency of Shantabai Bhatwadekar on the occasion of Ramnavmi on 14.04.1945. A sum of Rs. 5000 was collected as donation from the villagers, and the women of the village contributed monthly and yearly for this Maternity Home. The branch didn’t have a building of its own. Shri Ramcharan Rai, a renowned doctor of Bilaspur, helped the branch from time to time and also helped in obtainaing land from the government for the construction of a maternity home. Dr. Dixit, Dr. Ramcharan Rai, Dr. Pundalik Hari Sant and Dr. Shantabai Galande lent the required medical help. In the initial period there were 50 deliveries of babies in 1945-46 and 76 deliveries in 1946-47.
This maternity home was established so that needy people from poor and middle-class families could afford medical treatment at low cost. Within 5 years of establishment, the branch could construct a building of its own, and in 1971 a second floor was also built. A pharmacy called Ashok Medical Stores was opened in the Maternity Home which provided medicines at affordable price. Family Welfare Centre and Family Planning Centre was started in the branch.
